Brock Lesnar is set to fight Cain Velasquez at UFC 120 later this fall. Lesnar looked human against Shane Carwin earlier this month and showed people that he can be beat. We have a few months until UFC 120 so in the meantime we can speculate as to who will dethrone Lesnar.

Cain Velasquez

Velasquez will be the next challenger for Lesnar’s belt and looked dominant against former UFC champ Noguiera at UFC 110 in February. With 8 straight victories it’s hard to count Velasquez out. On top of the fact that he is a two time All-American wrestler, Velasquez has ended all but one of his fights via KO. He did show a chink in his armor at UFC 99 when Cheick Kongo landed some huge shots that clearly rocked him. If Lesnar lands those shots you can turn out the lights. Velasquez will need to bulk up for the Lesnar fight. At UFC 110 he weighed in at 243. Lesnar will cut to 265 and have a distinct size and power advantage.

Junior Dos Santos

If Dos Santos gets by Roy Nelson at UFC 117 in August he will be crowned the new #1 contender and will receive a title shot against either Lesnar or Velasquez. Dos Santos has won 5 straight in the UFC and his first victory was against the man who defeated Fedor, Fabricio Werdum. Dos Santos trains at of Black House Gym with guys like the Noguiera brothers and Anderson Silva so he won’t be starstruck when he looks across the cage and sees Lesnar. With a a brown belt in jiu jitsu and heavy hands Dos Santos could present Lesnar the most problems in the division.

Roy Nelson

Roy Nelson could be the dark horse in the UFC heavyweight division. Despite his win over Kimbo Slice and playful personality “Big Country” is a legit threat to Lesnar’s title. He has found his stride in the UFC knocking out both of his opponents in the first round. His unique physique works as an advantage and makes him very hard to get off you while on the ground. And if that belly wasn’t bad enough he is also a black belt in jiu jitsu under Renzo Gracie. The only knock on Nelson is that he seems to come up short against stellar competition. He has lost high profile fights to Andrei Arlovski, Ben Rothwell, and Jeff Monson.

Frank Mir

Should Frank Mir get by Antônio Minotauro Nogueira at UFC 119 Mir could find himself in a #1 contender’s fight with another top heavyweight to challenge Lesnar for a third time. Mir is the only man to defeat Lesnar but Brock evened the series up at UFC 100 last July with a huge TKO victory. The loss seemed to have lit a fire in Mir and he has put on a lot of size to try to make things more interesting should he get another crack at Lesnar.

Shane Carwin

A lot of people think Carwin should’ve beat Lesnar at UFC 116. Carwin clearly had Lesnar in trouble and it can be argues that the ref could’ve stopped the fight. But unfortunately for Carwin Lesnar survived the first round and came out strong and tapped him out. Carwin will have to start over but a win or two will put him back in title contention and perhaps another shot at Lesnar.

Fedor Emelianenko

Will we ever see Fedor in the UFC? It’s doubtful with his recent loss to Fabricio Werdum but there would still be big money in a Fedor-Lesnar fight should Lesnar clean out his division and Fedor wins a few fights in a row. “The Last Emperor” has been the most dominant heavyweight of the past decade and he could pose a lot of problems to Lesnar.

James Toney

No, I am not smoking crack. I realize there isn’t much of a chance that Toney will defeat Randy Couture at UFC 118 but he does have a puncher’s chance. And James Toney knows how to punch. Should Toney get by Couture and then go on to defeat another top UFC heavyweight like Carwin or Mir we could see Toney challenging for Brock Lesnar’s heavyweight title. This would be even bigger than Rocky Balboa vs. Thunderlips from Rocky 3. A former WWE champion fighting a former boxing champion. I thought only Strikeforce did these kind of fights. But it could happen and it could make Dana White and the Fertittas a lot more money.
