UFC Leaders - Takedowns Landed

UFC Leaders - Takedowns Landed

The eighth in our series going through the categories on our UFC Official Records page, this post deals with the record holders for the highest volume of takedowns landed.

What: This volume or "counting" stat is the most basic of all grappling metrics. It simply measures which fighters have been able to takedown their opponents more often than any other in UFC history.

Why: This category is as important to the grappling game as significant strikes landed is to the striking aspect of MMA. Fighters who can consistently takedown their opponents control the pace and position of the fight. While this metric doesn't account for things like ground control, it is still indicative of a highly effective technique; making an opponent think about the takedown that may be coming is effective in its own right.

Who:
Rank Fighter Total
1 Georges St-Pierre 66
2 Karo Parisyan 53
3 Gleison Tibau 52
4 Sean Sherk 50
5 Jon Fitch 48
6 Randy Couture 46
7 Rashad Evans 44
8 Clay Guida 41
9 Matt Hughes 40
10 Frank Edgar 35

Who's Next: Expect a lot of volatility in this list because of how closely the fighters are bunched together, with only a few takedowns between them. The next three fighters (Josh Koscheck, Tito Ortiz, and Ricardo Almeida) are all still active and could easily make the list with another takedown-heavy performance.

The Breakdown: Another category that finds Georges St-Pierre on top. It's just another feather in his cap and piece of evidence pointing to him as the premier wrestler in the game. Most of the other names are not likely to surprise. We see a veritable who's who of the UFC's wrestling talent with names like Sherk, Couture, Fitch, Guida, and Hughes.

The two names that are a bit suprising are the ones in the #2 and #3 slot. It seems that both Karo Parisyan and Gleison Tibau are here for similar reasons. They have a pretty easy time getting an opponent to the ground, but they have not had too much success in keeping them there.

The Takeaway: This category is kind of a strange one. While showing up on this list is a testament to a fighter's takedown ability, it can also be a testament to their inability to hold their opponent down. For example, a fighter who lands a takedown at the start of a round and is able to control his opponent effectively won't need another takedown. Showing up here might be indicative of good wrestling but bad ground control.

UFC announces partnership with NeuLion to broadcast interactive pay-per-views on UFC.

UFC announces partnership with NeuLion to broadcast interactive pay-per-views on UFC.

The UFC continues to outdo itself.
The number of ways to view a pay-per-view offering from the leading mixed martial arts promotion in the world continues to grow. You can order from your cable provider, stream online via popular destinations such as Yahoo and they've even started using social media giant Facebook to air free prelims.
Now they've officially upped the ante.
The organization today announced a partnership with NeuLion, Inc. to launch a new service that will provide fans with an interactive way to view live events. The website is already up and running but prior to UFC 126, the first event to officially offer the service, fans can preview the various features offered with a free demo look at round one of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard from UFC 125.
The website is aptly named UFC.TV. Company President Dana White commented via press release:
"Fans are always asking for more ways to get closer to the action and NeuLion's capabilities allow us to deliver. With this technology, fans have ultimate access during our events and can control camera views, audio and score the bouts along with other fans."
Sounds good, right? Well, there's a lot more, including a video preview after the jump.

This has the potential to be a groundbreaking venture by a company that is always looking for new ways to please its ever growing fanbase. NeuLion Chief Executive Officer Nancy Li believes they will gain even more with this partnership:
"We are pleased to be working with the UFC and our new partnership will bring fans a whole new set of products and services. Whether online or mobile, fans can stay connected to UFC like never before. Granting UFC fans the most immersive experience yet, we are excited to be a part of the next step in their digital expansion."
So how exactly is this going to be an "interactive experience?"
During live events, fans will have the ability to control the audio and video feed. You will be able to view the pay-per-view in broadcast quality with features such as quad view, picture-in-picture and even live chat with friends. You can even score the bouts yourself too.
As previously stated, the service will launch officially on Feb. 5 for the highly anticipated UFC 126 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will feature an exciting main event pitting Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort, not to mention a couple of potential slobberknockers in Forrest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin and Ryan Bader vs. Jon Jones.
Sounds like perfect timing. Anyone sold enough to give it a try?

Thoughts?

Honestly, I think not but that's the most intriguing match up I can think of in Strikeforce's HW division right now.

UFC 126: Kid Yamamoto vs. Demetrious Johnson To Air For Free on Facebook

UFC 126: Kid Yamamoto vs. Demetrious Johnson To Air For Free on Facebook

'Kid' Yamamoto

For anyone that was bummed out about not being able to see Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto’s UFC debut on Saturday night, your wish has been granted, and the UFC will broadcast his fight against Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson for free on Facebook starting at 8pm ET on Saturday night. UFC president Dana White had teased on his official Twitter page that he had something special in store for the Yamamoto vs. Johnson fight, and now the cat is out of the bag. The UFC announced the move on their Facebook account today.
The UFC tested the Facebook method of showing fights during the “UFC Fight for the Troops” broadcast a couple weeks back, and it appears the success will bring more fights to the social networking giant.
The fight between Yamamoto and Johnson brings the total guaranteed number of fights on Saturday night up to 8, including the Spike TV prelim show and the pay-per-view broadcast which kick off at 9pm and 10pm ET respectively.
Yamamoto makes his UFC debut after a storied career in Japan that saw him become one of the top featherweights in the sport just a few short years ago. He took time off to pursue his Olympic dream, and also faced injuries, but now he’s healthy and hoping to re-establish himself in the UFC.
To watch the broadcast just go to Facebook.com/UFC and ‘like’ their page and the free broadcast is available to anyone with a Facebook account.

A Bad Day For Mixed Martial Arts In New York, no closer to being legal.

A Bad Day For Mixed Martial Arts In New York, no closer to being legal.

Getting anything done in Albany is difficult and leads to frustration and efforts to legalize MMA are no exception. As I stated recently during an interview with TapouT Radio, I believed the odds of MMA being legalized in New York State this year would go up dramatically if Governor Cuomo, like Governor Patterson last year, included a provision in his Executive Budget lifting the ban on MMA.

Unfortunately, today we learned that Cuomo would take no such step. Indeed, there is no provision in the 2011-2012 Executive Budget permitting MMA in New York. Moreover, and perhaps more troubling, the Governor's Executive Budget proposes "[e]liminat[ing] the salary for the Chair of the State Athletic Commission."

I am not really sure what to make of this proposal, but it seems like a bad sign for all combative sports, not just MMA, and may shed some light on the Governor's view of the "economics" of these sports in New York in general. I have previously written about why I believe "economics" cannot be the focus of the debate to legalize in New York. As Governor Cuomo's Executive Budget makes clear, he is tackling a $10 Billion dollar budget deficit and MMA with an estimated $23 million in "economic impact" is simply not compelling.

As you may recall from my earlier post, "Zuffa's Support of Cuomo -- Does It Really Mean Anything?," the New York Post reported (in fact, Zach Arnold at Fight Opinion first reported) that "Las Vegas firm Zuffa Entertainmen [sic] has pumped $74,600 into Cuomo's campaign coffers -- and hopes the Democrat will use his political muscle to bend the Legislature into approving the controversial cage fights in New York."

As I reported back then (and as recently as a few weeks ago when the UFC conducted its press conference at Madison Square Garden), Governor Cuomo has never taken a position on the issue of legalization and so I did not read too much into the campaign contribution by Zuffa.

Bottom line, we still do not really know where Governor Cuomo stands on the issue but his failure to include a provision permitting MMA is not a good sign in my view. That said, I do not read the absence of the provision from the budget as an indication that Governor Cuomo would necessarily vote against the bill if it passed through the normal legislative channels, i.e. the Senate and the Assembly. Keep in mind, Governor Cuomo is currently facing a $10 billion deficit and is planning on cutting nearly 10,000 state workers in an effort to cut costs. MMA with an estimated $1.3 million in direct revenue to New York and $23 million in "economic impact" is clearly not going to be a budget priority.

Accordingly, there is still hope this legislative session and we should continue to fight to educate the legislators about MMA as a sport as I have previously written.
