90 Seconds with James Ryan, Starring Paul “Semtex” Daley
“The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is the source from which self-respect springs.”—Joan Didion
In case you didn’t already know, Paul “Semtex” Daley had a crucial decision to make at UFC 113 and not very much time to make it—unfortunately.
In a matter of seconds, the young Daley found himself embroiled in a personal conflict of principles. His choices were to try and salvage what was left of his severely damaged dignity (and face the potentially severe consequences, particularly in the wake of Dana White’s harsh criticisms of the recent post-fight Strikeforce brawl on CBS), or lose his own self-respect.
In a move that many consider downright stupid, Daley chose—career suicide.
Daley’s ability to make an instinctive and destructive decision like that so instantly, should really tell MMA fans two things about Paul Daley.
One: The hate that Daley felt for Koscheck was real.
Two: Daley completely lacks self-discipline.
Koscheck challenged Daley’s manhood in the ring with his sweet, gentle whisperings in the dying seconds of round three and figured, like anybody else in his position, that he would absolutely get away with the use of “Emasculating Verbal Warfare” (and of course, let’s not forget...all is fair in love and war).
Well, Koscheck was apparently wrong in his assessment that a “grateful to be in the UFC” Daley, would not retaliate.
Imagine that!
Daley was able to decide in an instant that he would much rather face the consequences of his actions, then to not act on his impulse. Daley knowingly strapped a bomb to himself just for the chance to punch Koscheck in the mouth one last time.
Self-discipline allows a [fighter] to feel his individuality, his inner strength, his talent. He is master of, rather than a slave to, his thoughts and emotions."— H.A. Dorfman
Bottom line: Daley lost control.
I don’t doubt that Daley now deeply regrets his actions, but in the moment, he was doing exactly what he felt that he needed to do—prove to Koscheck that he was nobody’s b*tch.
Well guess what, Daley…you are now unemployed from your dream job in the UFC, and you have lost a great deal of respect from the fans in the process.
Koscheck on the other hand, gets to appear on national television each and every week across from the Tiger Woods of MMA, George St-Pierre. Plus, he will get a title shot at the end.
Sorry Paul, but to me…you still look like the b*tch.
I guess the nickname “Semtex” also refers to Daley’s fragile emotional state, just as much as it does his explosive punching power.
Then again, at least Daley didn’t fake an injury for the second fight in a row.
