Couture-Toney UFC 118 Fight Nearly Set; Weight Issue Last Hurdle
Randy Couture wants it, James Toney wants it, and Dana White wants it, so what's holding up the Couture-Toney UFC 118 fight? Simple, it's a weight-ing game.
The fight, according to two sources MMA Fighting spoke with, could be signed as early as this weekend. There are only a few small issues to be worked out, including what weight the fight will be contested at.
According to one source, the original plan was for the fight to be a 215-pound catch weight, but as of the most recent correspondence between the two sides and the UFC, Toney has asked to "target" 220 as the weight.
If that is the case, the catch weight may be scrapped altogether and the fight may be promoted as a heavyweight fight.
Couture, according to the sources, does not have a strong preference in regards to the weight issue. The UFC hopes to finalize the fight in the next few days as the five-time champion Couture is soon to depart on an extended hunting trip.
The 46-year-old Couture spoke with MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani last weekend at UFC 113 and said he was very much looking forward to fighting Toney if the particulars could be worked out.
"He's been running his mouth saying he's going to knock everybody out," he said. "I'd be happy to welcome him to MMA."
Toney signed with the UFC in March. When he debuts in the octagon, he will become the highest-profile boxer ever to do so. With a pro record of 73-6-2, Toney won titles in six different weight classes.
UFC 118 will take place at Boston's TD Garden on Aug. 28.
