Former Strikeforce lightweight champion, Josh Thomson, will return to action against Pat Healy at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event, which is slated for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 26.The promotion today made the 155-pound showdown official.
Thomson is coming off a thrilling three-round unanimous decision loss to Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez. It was a title unification bout -- "The Punk" had to make-way for an interim champion ("El Nino") while he recovered from a spate of injuries.
In fact, the rematch -- Thomson got the nod in their first encounter with a lopsided five-round decision back in mid 2008 -- was the first fight back after a 15-month layoff.
Ring rust, therefore, might not be as much of an issue as he prepares to take on the surging veteran.
Healy is currently enjoying a three-fight win streak. He most recently outpointed Bryan Travers on all three judges scorecards at Strikeforce: "Challengers 8" just last month.
"Bam Bam" has been all over the map throughout his 38-fight career, including stops under the International Fight League (IFL), Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banners, among many others.
A big win here against a former champion might put an end to his career carousel and earn him a permanent spot on the Strikeforce lightweight roster.
Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum," which will air live on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET on fight night, will feature Fedor Emelianenko taking on grappling wizard Fabricio Werdum in the main event. Current Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristian "Cyborg" Santos will also be in action against Jan "Cuddles" Finney.
