Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck in Montreal?
MONTREAL – While top UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck (15-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) secured his spot as a coach on "The Ultimate Fighter 12" and a future title shot against champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) with a win at Saturday night's UFC 113 event, the American Kickboxing Academy fighter did little to endear himself to the Canadian crowd. After wincing in pain at what appeared to be a glancing (albeit illegal) knee and smothering brash opponent Paul Daley for three rounds in a relatively stale affair, Koscheck took to the mic to predict a loss for the Bell Centre's esteemed regular tenants, the NHL's Montreal Canadiens.
The move ensured Koscheck will forever reside as an enemy of the Montreal crowd, and the former collegiate wrestling champion said he now has no desire to fight St-Pierre on his home turf.
"Negative," Koscheck said of the possibility of facing St-Pierre in Montreal. "We're going to Pittsburgh for that one."
A Pennsylvania native, Koscheck admitted he's not much of a hockey fan. But with the Pittsburgh Penguins entrenched in a playoff series with the Canadiens, Koscheck took the opportunity to lash out at the Montreal faithful as they booed his victory.
"I knew that if they booed me, then I was going to get even with them," Koscheck said. "I didn't know that the Penguins did beat the – what is it, the Habs? – tonight. That didn't go over too well."
Koscheck has never been a big fan-favorite, and he instead seems to relish the role of villain. But a crowd that was already looking for a reason to hate the wrestler found it in the opening frame when an illegal knee from Daley that appeared glancing at best caused Koscheck to writhe in pain.
It was reminiscent of the odd occurrences in Koscheck's UFC 106 fight with Anthony Johnson, but the welterweight swears he wasn't embellishing with his reactions.
"I just kind of got kneed in the eye," Koscheck said. "I don't know if it was a knee or a punch, to be honest with you. I was on my knees and just got hit. I just tried to get a couple seconds to get my bearings and go back in."
Koscheck recovered and worked a controlling strategy for the remainder of the three rounds that featured lots of ground and very little pound.
UFC president Dana White didn't exactly give Koscheck a ringing endorsement following the bout, but he did admit he understood why the victor took such a cautious approach to the fight.
"A lot of times when there's that much smack-talking going on back and forth, which is very rare in mixed martial arts – it just goes to show that these guys have a lot of respect for each other – maybe it's a 'safety first' fight instead of the all-out war you think it's going to be," White said.
Koscheck and St-Pierre will now face off in the upcoming 12th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" as opposing coaches, and a title fight between the two will take place in December. A Las Vegas date seems more likely than either Montreal or Pittsburgh, but White said with the contest approximately seven months away, he has "no idea" where the bout will ultimately be held.
