The National Football League's New York Jets today fined its head coach for flipping off a few hostile fans at this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Miami" event.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported on Monday, Ryan released a statement in which he apologized for the bird-flipping, which a fan caught on a cellphone camera and distributed to the media.

While interviewed by a Showtime reporter during the Jan. 30 event, Ryan was heavily booed by the 8,000-plus fans in attendance at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. The booing and taunting were so loud that the minute-long interview could barely be heard over the arena's sound system.

Ryan, who smiled and laughed during the interview, jokingly warned the crowd that the Jets are going to beat the local Miami Dolphins twice next year.

After the interview, the taunting continued, and Ryan flipped off a group of fans. The photograph quickly spread over the Web.

Over the weekend, NFL officials said they planned to investigate the incident, and a further fine could be handed down by the league.
